Dance writer Ismene Brown is compiling interviews done between 1993 and 2004 for The Telegraph with Mikhail Baryshnikov. The interviews are being released in two parts on the Arts Desk. Here is Part 1.

Thanks, Francis.

This has been very pleasant and interesting reading. This is a compilation of old interviews so there are no earth-shaking revelations here, but then why should there be. I think that we get some good insights into what is important to this greatly talented and seemingly very levelheaded individual and into some of the important individuals in his life.

For instance he described Rudolph Nureyev as a "friend" and "workaholic" who probably led about the same lifestyle in the West as he led in the old Soviet Union. He discusses and expresses a reverence for the Kirov and especially for his teacher there (who was also Rudolph Nureyev's teacher) and at the same time expresses why for artistic and other reasons he decided to leave Russia. He also mentions some of the ballerinas that he worked with and why he admired them.

I look forward to next weekend's final series of interviews.

This quote seems to have a lot of truth.

"You cannot use the words “best dancer”....there’s no score."
