A have recently heard the tragic news that Ravil Azizbeyev, aged 32, a longtime member of the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre until this season, was murdered 'by hooligans' at the end of January.

What on earth can one say about such a wanton act of violence?

Ravil, a Vaganova graduate, had been a stalwart member of the company for many years and is deeply mourned by his fellow company members and his former classmates from the Vaganova School.

On stage he wasn't a great star but was a reliable member of the corps de ballet and off stage I remember Ravil as polite, kind and good-natured but also the life and soul of any party. He will be missed by very many people.

Rest in peace Ravil.

Sorry to hear this sad news, Cassandra.

Here's a link to a Business Week article on crime in Russia:

http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/c ... 110749.htm

Murder rates across Russia are four times higher than the US.

So sad. What a loss for the dance community there.
