Robert Cole has packed the 2008-09 season of Cal Performances: the last one in his 23-year tenure as the program's director: with new stage works by choreographer Mark Morris, director Peter Sellars and composer Jake Heggie, as well as appearances by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli and soprano Angela Gheorghiu.
The new season, which runs Sept. 6 to June 13, will also include the first local appearance by Ireland's Druid Theatre Company, presenting a John Millington Synge double bill of "The Playboy of the Western World" and "The Shadow of the Glen." Other highlights include a two-week residency by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, visits by the Kirov and Bolshoi Ballet companies, and performances by Milton Nascimento, Cesaria Evora and jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves.
