My introduction to Tudor ballets was seeing Sallie Wilson in a very impressive performance as Hagar in Pillar of Fire.

Here's more on the altercation involving Ms. Wilson and Clive Barnes, mentioned in the article above.

I was lucky enough to have seen her in Petruska -- not as the Ballerina Doll but as one of the other characters at the Fair. I believe her Hagar was broadcast on PBS with ABT many years ago.

I was even luckier to have met her with she came to Seattle in the early '70s to guest teach one summer for Seattle Festival Ballet, at the invitation of James DeBolt and Ron Sequoio, who later went on to found and co-direct the Manhatten Festival Ballet.

I recall her has being very energic, bright and sunny with a great sense of humor and being very nice to young fledglings. Interesting that someone so fun was cast and is being remembered for dramatic parts.

I also recall her having an incredible extension, particularly à la seconde -- impressive not just because of its amplitude but of its expressiveness.
