As a tie-in to today's announcement that the UK government plans to spend £15 per head on school children to introduce them to culture (too little too late in my opinion), the BBC has come up with the following quiz to find out how cultured we are.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7243594.stm

I scored 8 out of 10, failing on the jazz and Chaucer questions. Can anyone do better?

And by the way, is that Nikolai Hubbe in the picture of Apollo? It looks like him.

I don't see any Apollo pictures - am I looking in the wrong place, or have they changed some of the images...

Well, I didn't do very well on the quiz, but I'm not sure it's a true reflection of one's cultural knowledge. For one (and rightly so) being BBC, it's very British oriented and some of the stuff is not necessarily what I'd pick to teach kids.

I did think the Tchaikovsky question was not well chosen as that particular theme appears in more than one of his ballet scores. It might not be note for note, but one could easily mistake the scores.

I doubt that a quiz that uses only 10 questions to test your knowledge of that vast area, culture, wasn't meant to be taken seriously.

I got 7 out of 10, missing the questions about Chaucer, Marlowe's plays and the bridge architect. Until taking this test, I only knew the name of one of Marlowe's plays, and I have a very bad memory for architect's names. I'm sure I'm not even going to remember this one!
