Company Press Release
SOURCE: Vital Options
The Dance Of Life(TM) Event to Benefit Vital Options(R) TeleSupport(R) Cancer Network
July 13 Program Offers Improvisation Piano and Dance By Artists William Goldstein and Marla Bingham
LOS ANGELES, July 5 /PRNewswire/ -- A rare event of spontaneous artistic collaboration with noted recording artist and television and film composer William Goldstein and dance soloist and choreographer Marla Bingham will comprise The Dance Of Life(TM) on Thursday, July 13, at 7:00 p.m. The one-time-only program, which benefits Vital Options® and the Vital Options TeleSupport® Cancer Network, will take place at the Skirball Cultural Center at 2701 N. Sepulveda Boulevard near Mulholland in Los Angeles. Seating is limited to the first 350, and tickets are available at $50 and are tax deductible as permitted by law.
Goldstein's career spans an impressive range of musical genres, from contemporary works for Berry Gordy's MOTOWN records to symphonic compositions. Goldstein's prolific and versatile compositions have crossed the worlds of computer electronic music and pop and symphonic orchestral genres. In 1985, he created the first computer sequenced direct-to-digital score. Motion picture and television scores have earned Goldstein numerous Emmy and Grammy nominations.
Most recently, with the release of his solo piano CD First Impressions, he has for the first time begun to share with the public his improvisational gift, a resource that has been with him since childhood. Goldstein's improvisations, like classic impromptus, are ``instant compositions'' with form, shape and developed themes. Audience members at The Dance Of Life program will have an opportunity to participate by suggesting notes around which Goldstein will build his compositions in a live performance.
Joining Goldstein in improvisational performance will be Marla Bingham, internationally respected choreographer, dancer, and teacher of ballet, modern and jazz dance. She served as a soloist with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and toured throughout the world and performed before President Jimmy Carter at The White House. She has also danced with Jennifer Muller and the Pennsylvania Ballet Company and is a renowned master teacher in the United States and Europe.
In 1996, she founded the Marla Bingham Contemporary Ballet Dance Company for which she has choreographed more than a dozen pieces. Her works have been performed by American Indian Dance Theater, Joffrey Concert Group, Chamber Ballet USA, Mississippi Ballet, and Kazuko Hirabayashi Dance Theater. Bingham is a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe and considers herself part of a new wave of Native American artists who are ``creative, self-reliant innovators of America's future culture.''
``We're thrilled to bring the talents of William Goldstein and Marla Bingham in unseen, unheard, and unrehearsed works live before the audience,'' stated Selma Schimmel, founder and president of Vital Options. ``Very few artists would dare to perform in this improvisational style. We anticipate that this evening will be a most memorable stage event.''
Schimmel went on to explain that The Dance Of Life(TM) uses music and dance as a metaphor for getting through the cancer experience by aligning body, mind, and spirit. The Dance Of Life is a Dance For Life® production. Throughout the 1980s, Vital Options produced the well-known annual Dance For Life benefits that attracted a wide range of celebrities as performers and participants. The July 13 event brings this type of program to an intimate audience setting.
Following a breast cancer diagnosis at age 28, Schimmel founded Vital Options in 1983 as a not-for-profit organization for young adults with cancer. Vital Options has evolved to become a leading national cancer communications, support and advocacy organization for people of all ages.
Vital Options, in association with Premiere Radio Networks, produces The Group Room®, a weekly, nationally syndicated radio cancer call-in talk show. The Group Room links callers with other cancer survivors, family members, physicians, researchers, and health care providers who specialize in oncology. The Group Room airs live on Sundays in Southern California on LA TALK 1110AM from 1-3pm PT, as well as throughout the United States. The Group Room is also simulcast on the Internet at , and callers may contact the show at (800) GRPROOM (477-7666).
Vital Options is a national not-for-profit organization based in Sherman Oaks, Calif. and receives partial funding through educational grants provided by founding sponsor Bristol-Myers Squibb and corporate sponsors Ortho Biotech Inc., Pharmacia Oncology, and Genentech BioOncology. According to Lewis Seagal of the LA Times, "Swirling across a small carpeted stage at the Skirball Cultural Center on Thursday, Marla Bingham danced with such a powerful expressive focus, and such unerring technical surety, that it became hard to believe that this locally based ballet choreographer and teacher was making up her solo moment by moment."
