The presentation, made by Giannandrea Poesio, will be accompanied by a video projection of pictures from the book.
Words of Dance, was presented already in 2003 in Italian and French. Parole di Danza, Paroles de Danse, Words of Dance, this book is extraordinary for its ability to express dance in words, as the title itself suggests. Words able to cross Europe, voicing this way an art so fleeting and so sublime at the same time, as dance is, through the incredible strength of the pictures by Alessio Buccafusca, leader of the international dance photography, commented by Alberto Testa, one of the most famous dance critic.

This book pays homage to the great contemporary classical dance, confirming the inextinguishable vitality of an art so gorgeous and elevated to inspire such words of admiration:
“We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once” – (Nietzsche).

There will be a review of this book in the March edition of "Ballet-Dance Magazine".

Words of Dance

By Alberto Testa with Photography by Alessio Buccafusca

Book Review by Patrizia Vallone

March 2004

Dance as a performing art is mute. It’s all in the body; words are superfluous and often downright useless. The body becomes music, poetry, narration, drawing, sculpture, architecture. Everything is already expressed by the dance itself and the performers’ bodies.

Precisely because of its silence - the magic and mystery of bodies transformed by motion into narration - dance has always attracted poets and writers of all times and cultures. Many have written about it, fascinated by its transient nature and its cruelty to the performers. No art is so hard on those who create it and therefore love it more than anyone else, because it is so closely related to youth, health and physical beauty. Dance is a sublimely ephemeral art: it sublimates instantly and persists only in the memory of those who have experienced it.

Here is the text in English and Italian of Alessio Buccafusca's introduction to the presentation of his images at the London launch of "Words and Dance":

****************************************

Good evening ladies and gentlemen.

It is a great honour for me to have the chance to present the book “Words of Dance” for the first time in London, in this special place which represents the main institution for the promotion of cultural exchanges between Great Britain and Italy and
I wish to express a special recognition to the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute, Mr. Mario Fortunato for giving us this opportunity.

Words of Dance, dance in words; it was not easy to make a “choice” of the photographs included in “Words of Dance” from my archive of about 50.000 pictures collected in many years of experience in theatres all over the world.
I have been photographing dance since 1977 and in all these years I had the chance to work with great dancers such as Rudolf Nureyev, Vladimir Vassiliev, Carla Fracci and other talented artists.

It was really hard to make a selection, since each dance picture has a lot “to tell” and we can say that the choice was finally made by words themselves, trying to adapt the pictures to what the poems chosen by Professor Testa inspired.

As I told before, each picture has something “to say”, each picture “ tells” a story and the dance photographer is witness and part of that story at the same time, catching the moment enriched by the emotion of a movement.

It is important to underline the great responsibility of the dance photographer.
Each dance movement represents a fleeting moment, but each dance movement is the result of years of hard work for a dancer.

Then, it is a precise responsibility for the dance photographer to give evidence to the perfection of that movement, to the harmony and the essence of each photographic attitude. A wrong dance photograph can be not only a bad picture, it can destroy years of hard work, and even an artist’s renown.

Therefore, dance photography is not only mere technique, it can be considered a mission.

Now I wish to show you the pictures, and start with you a special journey in the world of art and poetry.

Thank you for your attention.

***********************************

Signori e signore buonasera.

Alessio BUCCAFUSCA
