It's easier to discover this in some places than in others, and in the Bay Area we are blessed. As the organizers behind Bay Area Celebrates National Dance Week -- which launches Friday -- like to tout, the Bay Area is first in dance activity per capita in the United States. The San Francisco Ballet, ever on the rise, has put us on the international map. But ballet is just the beginning of what dance can mean in this town. We've got the Chitresh Das Dance Company's Indian Kathak to hold you spellbound and Fua Dia Congo's Congolese stamping to raise the roof. We've got the cool sophistication of the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company and the hot sexiness of ODC Dance. We've got butoh masters who writhe like primordial ooze and aerial artists who take to the skies like shooting stars.

And a welcome by the SF Chronicle Sunday Datebook Editor to National Dance Week, a festival that even the NDW website at one time described as the arts world's best kept secret:

Did you know that the Bay Area is second only to New York City in dance activity per capita in the United States? <a href=http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2005/04/17/PKG27BC4OU1.DTL target=_blank>more</a>

BAY AREA BRINGS NATIONAL DANCE WEEK ALIVE

By Mark Whittington

Mercury News

The Bay Area is a hotbed of dance; it has one of the largest dance communities outside of the New York City area. So, it makes sense that it celebrates National Dance Week with a vengeance.

There are more than 200 free events -- performances, dance classes, open rehearsals and lectures -- spread around the Bay Area from Friday through May 1.
