In the NY Times:
Quote:
Putting New York at the center of his artistic universe once more, Mikhail
Baryshnikov, the international ballet star and former artistic director of American Ballet Theater, says he will open an arts center in Manhattan in 2004. He has disbanded his touring modern dance troupe, the White Oak DanceProject.

What an exciting idea! This clearly means a lot to Baryshnikov and his contribution of $2m is a remarkable sum for a dancer to put into any project.

On the question of White Oak Dance Project, the word in November from Christina Sterner was that the Company, "....will be suspending operations in 2003 and is officially on hiatus while Baryshnikov focuses on other projects." So unless there has been a change in the past month, we may still see it touring again.

The public subsidy system in the UK means that there are a number of dance centres spread around the country, called National Dance Agencies. They offer rehearsal space, classes and generally grease the wheels of independent dance. However, they certainly don't have the profile of this new venture.

Another article (this one starts with the dissolution of White Oak):

Quote:
Baryshnikov starting N.Y. arts center

Los Angeles Times/Philadelphia Inquirer

Mikhail Baryshnikov has dissolved the White Oak Dance Project, the troupe he founded with choreographer Mark Morris in 1990, and has turned his energies to starting an arts center on Manhattan's West Side, slated to open in 2004.
