Following my earlier message that Dance Books is closing its Cecil Court shop and moving out of London, I'm happy to report that we have negotiated a short extension of our lease.
We shall now be open all through December and January, and our last day of business will be on January 27. Please come and do your Christmas shopping with us!
And many thanks for all the kind messages of support we've received. May I reiterate that Dance Books is NOT closing down as a business: we shall continue as mail order and educational suppliers, and, of course publishers (Ivor Guest's next book, Ballet under Napoleon, is currently being edited, for publication in Spring next year).
Image
you know, someone should make a film of the last month or so, all the people who come in, the love of the regulars for the place, and for IT'S place in the english cultural scene...its history from cyril beaumont's days, london at christmas - hopefully you might get JUST enough snow to make it scenic on one day for the cameras...., as overseas people imagine london to be...
do you know any film-makers, stuart?

Dear Dances
As someone who has been in the shop numerous times over the years, bought a fair few books and browsed even more, I shall be deeply sorry to see it close. (In fact so often you would probably recognise me by sight, though hopefully without too much of a "Oh God, not him again!" reaction.) You see starting as a student, then as dancer and now as a teacher and academic Dance Books has been an integral part of my cultural landscape for so many year that I have come to regard it as an almost immutable part of the dance scene in London, as important in its way as any of the theatrical settings in which the art it has helped to chronicle takes place.
Now it is to go and there will be very many of us who will be deeply saddened by its loss. However, I for one know that the important work of maintaining high levels of dance scholarship through publications and the supply of resources to all sections of the dance world will continue and I would like to send you and all involved in this new project my best wishes for the future along with a heartfelt thanks for the past.
But as things are not yet over perhaps I might be permitted one indulgence. I would like, with your permission of course, to come into the shop every couple of weeks or so over the remaining months and take some photographs, perhaps with a view to placing a series of them on this site and give the rest of our members, who may never have had the pleasure of visiting it, a taste of what many of us in the dance world have come to regard as our bookshop.
Best wishes
Tuk
