From the Montreal Gazette:

quote:
Where the arts are a big deal
CINARS is an international market of performing arts where venues come looking to buy
"What with CINARS and the World Summit, this has been Canada's United Nations week for the performing arts. But CINARS is for the doers, not the talkers. I was told again and again, by foreign delegates at CINARS, that this is the top international market for the performing arts in North America. The American equivalent (APAP) lacks the European flavour.
CINARS is no longer Quebec's juicy little global-market secret. Australian and African artists are using it as their landing point in North America. The Koreans have a major delegation. A Scottish company, Stellar Quines, is selling a Scots translation of a Quebec play, The Reel of the Hanged Man, by Jeanne-Mance Delisle.
California-New York agent Sue Bernstein, who deals in new music, said she was here because CINARS attracts more international buyers than American arts markets do. But an impressive number of American presenters come here, too. At Wednesday morning's showcase, Bernstein and I were surrounded by buyers from Nebraska, Arkansas, Arizona and Texas. "If they're here," Bernstein said, "chances are they're with a fairly substantial facility." That means a venue of more than 1,000 seats."
