Great resourse, Michael. I noticed in the "New and Updated" column, a mention was made of Nashville Ballet Choreographer, Paul Vasterling. I met Paul a while back, and found him extremely personable.
He was telling me about the choreographing of "Heart," a ballet accompanied live with recording artist Nancy Griffith. It can be hard to meld dance with contemporary music, and not have one take a precedent. I saw this ballet and it couldn't have worked better. The choreography suited the aready written songs, (They weren't written for the dance)and was charming, bright, and poignant.
Paul told me this story of when Nancy came to final rehearsals to work with the dancers. She sat in her chair with her guitar and got started, the dancers were performing, and then there was silence, no music. The dancing dwindled off and Nancy apologized. She had never spent time around ballet dancers, and she was so awed by the movement that she just stopped playing. Paul is a very talented choreographer.
[This message has been edited by Maggie (edited July 26, 2000).]
