Hello,

My name's Benjamin Poirier,
I am currently working with La Compania Nacionale de Danza in Mexico City.
I moved recently from the Leipzig Ballet, in Germany where I had the chance to create a choreography for some of the dancers.
Here is a text for those of you who are interested to know the meaning behind my choreography.

? [Point d'Interrogation]

Music by Craig Armstrong & Ludwig van Beethoven

Revelations from Plunkett & Macleane Original SoundTrack
World Trade Center Cello Theme from World Trade Center Original SoundTrack
Hulk Theme from The Incredible Hulk Original SoundTrack
Ruthless Gravity from As If to Nothing
&
Beethoven Virus by Diana Boncheva feat. BanYa

My choreography is called ?
The interesting thing is that you may have read this symbol in your own language or you just read the symbol without even saying it but you still know what it meant, maybe your neighbours would have read this symbol differently. We all have our own way of reading this symbol. My choreography does not start as soon as the red curtains open, it already started when you first saw this simple symbol.
What does it mean? What does it say? A question about what? who? where? or why?
All these questions that we are asking ourselves in our Life prove that we are not only human being but that we all have our own personality with our own thoughts.

This piece is in 4 different movements, each very different from the other one but there is still a very strong link between them.

I have decided to work with the music from Craig Armstrong because ever since I heard his music I totally fell in love with his style. It could be classical, neo classical but also modern and I loved how he played with it. Everything is in between. It is not too classical but it is not too modern. I love how he brings all those feelings through the different instruments. Most of the he uses strings in his music, which is my favorite instrument. You can play a lot of different style and you can feel it in the choreography also, like in the 2nd movement I tried to bring this sexiness from the strings, with the pointe shoes and danced by 7 girls.

The idea to play with the black light and the costumes is perfect for the theme of my choreography. I love to play with shadows and lights. The black light is like magical, eventhought you light something, you won't be able to see it, but it is really there! You will see certain things but you won't see others.
It comes again with each personalities, the ? symbol is like a written representation of the black light and it explains that there is something, but we are not sure what or who or why...

The musicality is very important for me.
We should be able to See the Music through the Dance.
Music and Dance should mix together and bring us these different feelings
I had a lot of inspiration from Wayne McGregor, Uwe Scholz, Georges Balanchine, William Forsythe

I hope you will enjoy it.
Fell free to comment, I would be really glad to talk about it with you...
