Hello all,<P>We will be shutting down the forum from 10pm to midnight, US East Coast time, Wednesday, August 7th, 2002, so that we may bring you a better and faster forum.

to be certain if it is your pc or something else you can do a trace to see how many hops there are between you and the server and how long it takes to reach the servers by doing the following:

On your computer, go to Start, then to Programs, and open MS-DOS Prompt (it should be a black screen), then type in:

c:\windows\tracert and click enter.
From here I have 16 hops in around 65ms ( is the old server)

Then try typing:

c:\windows\tracert and click enter.
For that URL I have 18 hops in about 87ms.
This is the new server where the forum has moved to.

This test means that I'm a little further than before, so it's a little slower. It depends on where you are situated in the world, for me it doesn't make much difference, and usually less the 20 hops is ok. If there are more you may get timed out if you use a slow connectivity like a 28,8k modem.

hope this help :)

As you can probably tell, we've updated our UBB to a more current version. There are a few new features to play with but for the most part it should be business as usual. :)

Do you ever hear snippets of other people's conversations as you're walking down the street and think they sound inane or bizarre when you can't hear them in context? Now that everyone can see the beginnings of the latest posts on the "Today's Active Posts" screen, I'm inclined to include a synopsis of the thread so far at the beginning of my posts. That way I can avoid a situation such as a thread titled "Why Pay for Class?" followed by an apparent non sequitur such as "Maybe if they put grapes on top of the mesh...." (Thanks, Basheva -- I had fun trying to figure out that connection before clicking on the topic!)

LOL - DJB....however, my conversation gets even funnier (ok bizarre) when heard in context.

I have to add something that strikes me as funny. After one posts, a page comes up that says "sit tight, we are taking you back to..."

sit tight? being a contrarian I tried to sit loose...that's what seat belts are for.

sit tight?

In England, "sit tight" means "no need to take any action". Is it different in the US?

I guess in the US it means - sit still - don't be impatient - or at least 'give us a moment' it's the same thing, really as in the UK.

However, the entire phrase strikes me as funny. Ok - not hilarious funny, just sorta funny bone funny.

Just a little note to say that the Forum's clock is now set to the server's natural time which is the same as US Eastern Time.
