By Jerry Hochman
July 12, 2005 -- Metropolitan Opera House, Lincoln Center, New York City
Love was all around the Met last night at Amanda McKerrow's final performance with ABT. Of course, there was the love displayed on stage between Giselle and Albrecht. But this performance wasn't about Giselle and Albrecht. This performance was about Amanda McKerrow.

Royal Ballet - 'Giselle'
By Jerry Hochman
July 16, 2004 -- Metropolitan Opera House, New York
I feel cheated. Not because of anything wrong with The Royal Ballet’s performance of Ashton’s "Cinderella" on July 16 at the Met, and certainly not because of anything wrong with Alina Cojocaru, who danced the lead. On the contrary, in every respect it was a memorable performance of a memorable ballet.

“Spirits in white gowns... the snow-white wilis who waltz pitilessly the whole night long... What a pretty ballet one could make of that!” wrote prominent French writer and critic Théophil Gautier in 1841, inspired by a legend from Heinrich Heine’s novel De l’Allemagne. This is how the greatest romantic ballet Giselle or Les Wilis (the original title) was conceived.

The San Francisco Ballet's current production of "Giselle" is a beautiful rendition of this most perfect of ballets. The romantic story is retold through Helgi Tomasson's excellent staging, simple and direct mime, and choreography which honor the spirit of this great classical work.

Kirov Ballet - 'Giselle'
By Catherine Pawlick
February 19, 2006 -- Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg
A young dancer’s debut in a staple role of the classical repertoire is often the indicator of a ballerina’s blossoming career, the promise of a sparkling future, the intimation of her name joining other great names in dance history. As such, it is laden with high pressure and even higher expectations. On February 19, St. Petersburg ballet adorers filled the Mariinsky Theatre to every possible corner in order to get a glimpse of Yulia Bolshakova in yet another debut.

The Washington Ballet - 'Giselle'
By Carol Herron
October 22, 2004 -- Eisenhower Theatre, Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C.
I went to see "Giselle" by the Washington Ballet with a little trepidation...my lovely local ballet taking on one of the most revered classics. But I was not disappointed (sigh of relief) The Washington Ballet did this dance justice, and performed with precision, beauty and panache.
