White Nights Festival 2006

'Chopiniana', 'Scheherezade', 'Firebird'
by Catherine Pawlick - July 17, 2006
It was with great fascination that I watched yet another aspect of Daria Pavlenko’s persona reveal itself in her debut as Zarema in “Scheherezade” this month. With successful portrayals of Odette/Odile and Giselle alongside a host of other roles already in tow, Pavlenko proved that she can dance the sultry sex symbol just as convincingly as the innocent, pure swan or peasant girl.

Toba Singer reports in on a speactular gala
The star-studded program included Lorna Feijoo and Nelson Madrigal of Boston Ballet, Xiomara Reyes of ABT, the Sarabia brothers - Rolando, of Houston Ballet and Daniel, a member of Boston Ballet, Adiarys Almeida of Cincinnati Ballet, and Alihaydee Carreño of Ballet Classical de Santo Domingo. They were joined by guest dancers, Joaquin De Luz of New York City Ballet, Sara Webb and Randy Herrera of Houston Ballet, and Meagan Finley of McAllen Ballet.
The Black Swan pas de deux from “Swan Lake” is performed by Adiarys Almeida and Joaquin De Luz. They dance with steadfast assurance, and in the case of De Luz, almost a little too much, considering Siegfried's dilemma. In short order, he is properly bedazzled by his partner...

In Search of Alberto Spadolini
by Rosella Simonari
Alberto Spadolini was a great dancer within the Parisian music-hall environment -- he often choreographed his pieces, was also a figurative painter, decorator, restorer, actor, singer & occasionally writer. His was a very eclectic figure, and his life emerges as an adventurous story whose many pieces still remain hidden.

Pacific Northwest Ballet's Nicholas Ade
by Dean Speer and Francis Timlin
"Debra gives a lot of opportunities for PNB dancers to experiment with teaching on her students – to try their wings as teachers...I enjoy helping a student accomplish what they have been wanting to do. As I said earlier, it’s a slow process and we celebrate the small victories. I hope that my excitement and energy will feed the students. It’s a reciprocal relationship.

Takao Kawaguchi - 'D.D.D.'
by Rosella Simonari -- June 9, 2006
Kawaguchi’s performance is characterised by jumps and runs in and out of the stage, alternated with poses he articulates on the table-ring in which his limbs are joined together in unusual manners. In one pose he joins his hands on his back and tries to move with his bent legs on the small table.

Pacific Northwest Ballet - 'Jewels'
by Dean Speer --June 3 and 9, 2006, McCaw Hall, Seattle
Pacific Northwest Ballet’s premiere of Balanchine’s full-length abstract ballet “Jewels” presented two diamonds... One brightly burning and nearing the conclusion of her performance career – Patricia Baker – and another making her first forays into the Van Cleef and Arpels-inspired role – Carla Körbes.
