Danish Dance
The Best of Copenhagen in May
Royal Danish Ballet - 'Extravaganza'
by Kate Snedeker -- May 17-22, 2006, Royal Theatre, Copenhagen
Composed of an eclectic trio of ballets -- Yuan Yuan Wang’s “Colour of Love”, Angelin Preljocaj’s “La Stravaganza” and Anna Lærkesen’s “Polacca” -- ‘Extravaganza’ was an intriguing though slightly emotionally downbeat finale to the season. The ballets explored the human psyche, each stretching the dancers in different emotional and technical directions.

Danish Dance Theatre - 'Working Man', 'Insomnia', 'Kridt'
by Gunild Pak Symes -- May 5, 2006, Folkteatret, Copenhagen
Audiences in Copenhagen this spring caught a glimpse of the choreographic genius that is Tim Rushton, the Danish Dance Theatre’s British-born director, blooming on the main stage of Folketeatret, the new home of this energetic group. Young, weird, whacky and wily, the dancers performed three masterworks by Rushton to be toured as part of the company’s repertory in 2006-2007.

Royal Ballet 2006
Royal Opera House, London
'The Sleeping Beauty'
by Ana Abad-Carles -- May 18, 2006
The new/old “Sleeping Beauty”, which the Royal Ballet has produced for their 75th Anniversary has all the traditional ingredients: something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue, pink, lilac and all the pastel colours of the rainbow…The idea to revive Oliver Messel’s production from 1946 was interesting in a way. There were strong elements in that staging that seemed necessary after Natalia Makarova’s ill- advised production in 2003.

'La Fille mal Gardée'
by Ana Abad-Carles -- April 26, 2006
There are few ballets that are as enjoyable as “La Fille Mal Gardée,” and even fewer that can rightfully claim to be a choreographic masterpiece.

A Conversation with Yuri Possokhov
by Mary Ellen Hunt
In these days of tricks and glitz, there are precious few men who fit the mold of the old fashioned danseur noble, but of this generation, one of the most inspiring is surely San Francisco Ballet’s Yuri Possokhov. As a performer, the Bolshoi-trained star melds the modernity of contemporary dance and the elegance of classical roles with deceptive ease.

San Francisco Ballet -- Retirement Gala for Principals Yuri Possokhov & Stephen Legate and soloist Peter Brandenhoff
by Toba Singer -- May 5, 2006
There seemed to be no time for extemporaneous speeches, as on similar occasions such as the retirement of Joanna Berman or Christopher Stowell. Helgi Tomasson made very brief remarks at the top of the show during which he thanked the three dancers who were retiring for their artistry and dedication to the company.

Inbal Pinto Dance Company - 'Oyster'
by Mary Ellen Hunt -- May 7, 2006, Yerba Beuna Center for the Arts, San Francisco
Pinto, who is a former member of Israel’s acclaimed Batsheva Dance Company, incorporates many familiar theatrical touches into her sideshow... but the pleasure of “Oyster” is not that it breaks new ground, but in how expertly she and collaborator Avshalom Pollak have put the elements together.
